CaptainThe designated representative of a team in communications with tournament officials.Check-InA confirmation step requiring participants to actively confirm their attendance within a specified window before a tournament begins.CircuitA series of tournaments linked by a shared points system that rewards consistent performance across multiple events.Closed QualifierA qualifier tournament restricted to invited teams, regional finalists, or teams that cleared open qualifiers.

DisputeA formal challenge raised by a team or player contesting a match result, ruling, or referee decision.Double EliminationA bracket format in which a competitor must lose twice before being eliminated.

EloA rating system originally designed for chess that assigns a numerical score to each player based on their performance against others.EscrowA financial arrangement where prize money is held by a neutral third party until the tournament concludes and results are verified.

ForfeitA voluntary or enforced concession of a match or tournament game.Free AgentA player who is not currently contracted to or affiliated with any team.Free to EnterA tournament that charges no registration fee to participants.

Grand FinalThe concluding match of a tournament that determines the champion.Group StageA preliminary phase where competitors are divided into smaller groups and play a round-robin or swiss format.

LadderA persistent ranked system where players or teams accumulate points over time through match results.LAN EventA tournament where all participants compete in person on a local area network, eliminating internet latency as a variable.LeaderboardA ranked list displaying competitors' standings, points, or ratings in a tournament or season.Live OpsThe ongoing management and operation of a live tournament or game service in real time.

Map PoolThe set of maps or stages that are eligible to be played in competitive matches for a given game or season.Match IDA unique identifier assigned to each match in a tournament system.Match ReportA formal record submitted by one or both teams documenting the outcome of a match.Match VetoThe process by which teams ban and pick maps or stages for a series.MMR (Matchmaking Rating)A hidden or visible numerical value used by matchmaking systems to estimate a player's skill level.

No-ShowA situation where a team or player fails to appear for a scheduled match within the check-in window.

OfficiatingThe process of administering and enforcing tournament rules during competition.Online TournamentA tournament conducted entirely over the internet where competitors play from separate locations.Open QualifierA preliminary tournament open to any team or player regardless of prior results or invitation status.OvertimeAdditional game time or rounds played when a match is tied at the end of regulation.

PlayoffsThe knockout phase of a tournament where the remaining competitors play elimination matches.Prize PoolThe total monetary sum available to be won by competitors in a tournament.PrizeoutThe process of distributing earned prize money to winning players or teams after a tournament concludes.

RankA tiered designation — such as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Diamond — that broadly represents a player's skill level within a game's competitive ladder.Ranked QueueA matchmaking mode within a game where players compete for rating points in official ladder standings.RegistrationThe process through which teams or players sign up to participate in a tournament.ReplayA recorded playback of a match that can be reviewed after the game concludes.RosterThe official list of players eligible to compete for a team in a tournament.Round RobinA group-stage format where every participant plays against every other participant once.

ScrimA practice match between two teams arranged outside of official competition.SeedingThe process of ranking competitors before a tournament to structure the bracket so that stronger teams do not meet in early rounds.Single EliminationA tournament format where a competitor is eliminated after a single loss.SubstitutionThe replacement of one rostered player with another during a tournament.Swiss SystemA tournament format where participants with similar win/loss records are paired each round.

Team TransferThe movement of a player from one team to another, which may require approval from both teams and the league operator.

V

VOD (Video on Demand)A recorded broadcast of a match or tournament stream available for viewing after the live event.

W

WalkoverA match result awarded to one side when the other side is absent, disqualified, or withdraws.
