Participant and Match Rules
How to configure check-in, substitutions, trust-and-safety gating, match format, veto, and score reporting for a tournament.
Participant rules define who can compete and how they check in. Match rules define how individual matches are played, veto'd, and scored. Both are set at the tournament level.
Where to find it
- Participant rules: Projects → [Your Project] → [Tournament] → Settings → Participant
- Eligibility rules (country, age): Projects → [Your Project] → [Tournament] → Settings → Registration — see Registration Settings for the full walkthrough.
- Roster (team) size: set by the discipline you choose for the tournament, not a manual toggle — see Settings → Discipline.
- Match rules: Projects → [Your Project] → [Tournament] → Settings → Match
- Map veto / pick-ban: Projects → [Your Project] → [Tournament] → Settings → Veto
Step by step
Roster size
Team size isn't set on the Participant settings page. The minimum and maximum number of players per roster is determined by the discipline (game) you select for the tournament, on Settings → Discipline. Each discipline carries its own team-size configuration, so switching disciplines can change what counts as a valid roster.
Participant rules
- Configure match check-in — Require participants to check in before each match. Set a check-in window (in minutes) during which teams must confirm they're ready; teams that don't check in within the window can be marked as no-shows.
- Allow late check-in — Optionally allow a team to check in after the window closes instead of being auto-marked as a no-show.
- Allow substitutions — When enabled, participants can swap a player into their roster mid-tournament. Leave this off to lock rosters once the event starts.
- Require verification — Require participants to complete identity/account verification before they're eligible to register or compete.
- Set a minimum reputation score — Block registrants whose player reputation score falls below the threshold you set.
- Exclude restricted tier — Exclude participants who have been placed in a restricted trust tier (for example, flagged for prior anti-cheat or conduct violations) from registering.
For country and age restrictions, see the Eligibility rules section on Registration Settings — those controls live on the Registration settings page, not here.
Match rules
- Configure the default match format — Choose the number of maps or games per match: Best of 1, Best of 3, Best of 5, or Best of 7. This applies to all matches in the tournament unless a specific stage overrides it.
- Set the expected match duration — Used for scheduling; it doesn't cut a match off once it's running.
- Choose a game mode — Options are populated from the tournament's discipline, where the discipline defines specific modes.
- Require score reporting — When enabled, participants must submit their match result before it's considered complete.
- Require evidence — When enabled, participants must attach evidence (such as a screenshot) along with their submitted score.
- Set the dispute window — Define how many minutes after a result is submitted a participant can file a dispute before it locks in.
Map veto / pick-ban
Match format (Best of 1/3/5/7) is configured on the Match settings page above, but map veto and pick-ban sequencing is configured separately on Settings → Veto:
- Tournament-level veto config — Set the default veto process (map pool, ban/pick order) applied across the whole tournament.
- Stage-level override — Override the veto configuration for a specific stage if it needs a different map pool or sequence than the rest of the tournament.
- Veto templates — Save and reuse a veto configuration across tournaments instead of rebuilding it each time.
What happens next
With participant and match rules in place, you are ready to configure how the competitive structure is laid out. See Tournament Structure and Formats to set up brackets and stages, or Seeding and Placement to control how participants are ordered in the draw. When registration is not yet set up, see Registration Settings.
